Moana Pasifika to be dumped from Super Rugby Pacific : report
AUCKLAND, 15 APRIL 2026 (ESPN)—Moana Pasifika’s time in Super Rugby Pacific will reportedly come to an end at the completion of this season, reducing the competition to just 10 teams.
According to a News Corp report on Tuesday, Moana’s playing group was earlier in the day informed by the current owners that the franchise would not play on next season, due to a lack of funding.
It means that after starting out as a 12-team competition in 2022, Super Rugby Pacific will from 2027 be contested by only 10 sides, with Melbourne Rebels having been wound up at the end of the 2024 season amid crippling financial debts.
Owners of the Rebels continue their legal action against Rugby Australia, though the national body is confident it has the firmer standing and will win the case when it heads to court in Melbourne.
ESPN has approached both Super Rugby and New Zealand Rugby for comment.
Noise around Moana’s future has been bubbling away for some time, with a proposal at one point even suggesting the franchise could have merged with the Rebels. But concerns grew around the team’s future over the offseason when questions around the financial stability of majority owners Pasifika Medical Association began to surface.
The expansion franchise, that was originally set up by New Zealand Rugby with the help of World Rugby, enjoyed its best season last year when All Blacks star Ardie Savea signed on as their prized recruit, the back-rower later declaring he was “home” after multiple sensational performances that later earned him the competition’s player of the year award.
But Savea’s decision to spend the 2026 season in Japan, under new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie, immediately raised doubts about Moana’s ability to compete consistently in Super Rugby this season, with the team now having so far managed just an opening win over the Fijian Drua through the first nine rounds of the season.
Coach Tana Umaga has meanwhile signed on with the All Blacks as a member of Rennie’s staff, meaning the franchise would have been looking for a new leader beyond this season regardless. Umaga earlier in the year hit out at local rivals, the Blues, saying the franchise did “not want us here”.
Moana had also struggled to nail down a homebase of their own, playing at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium, in Pukekohe, Rotorua and Albany throughout their four-year existence. The team had taken a game to Samoa in 2023 and was hoping to play one match in Tonga this year, only for the plan to be scrubbed when a major sponsor was unable to be found.
If Moana are confirmed to be headed for the scrapheap it will leave Super Rugby with yet another challenging midseason narrative, right at a time when it is getting ready to celebrate “Super Round” as the official opening act of Christchurch’s One New Zealand Stadium in 10 days’ time.
Moana will in the meantime head to Sydney on Friday night for their clash with the Waratahs, a match that will be played in front of Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle.
Just where Savea, who had insisted he would return to Moana in 2027, might land remains to be seen, but former franchise the Hurricanes would be favoured to land his prized signature.
If there is a silver lining for Super Rugby, it may be that the competition, consisting of 10 teams, could move to a full 18-game home-and-away tournament, which would please club bosses who have long bemoaned just the seven home games and the associated gate revenue.
The potential end of Moana comes at a time when the NRL is aggressively pushing rugby league across the Pacific, desperate to build its market share after the success of Samoa and Tonga at Test level.
Part of Australian Government’s $600 million(US$427 million) package set aside for the Papua New Guinea expansion NRL team has reportedly been instead carved off for the growth of rugby league in Samoa, Fiji and Tonga, which has led Rugby Australia to push for greater funding for the 15-player game through the region.
Meanwhile, Fijian Drua coach Glen Jackson has announced he will not take up the one-year option attached to his two-year deal.
The Drua, who sit in 10th position through nine rounds, have only once made the finals and have struggled for form away from Fiji….PACNEWS

Knockout hope still alive for the Fijian Drua
NADI, 15 APRIL 2026 (FBC SPORTS)—The Fijian Drua’s hopes of reaching the Super Rugby Pacific knockout stage remain alive as they prepare for a crucial clash against the Brumbies in Canberra this weekend.
The Drua head into round 10 with renewed confidence following their narrow 24-22 win over the Western Force in Lautoka last week.
Currently sitting 9th on the standings with 12 points from three wins, the side knows every game is now critical with six matches remaining in the season.
The team will be aiming to build momentum and finally break their away-game struggles when they face the Brumbies.
There is added motivation for the players after confirmation that head coach Glen Jackson will not complete his three-year term, with the squad determined to give him a strong finish by pushing for a late run into the playoffs.
The Drua will take on the Brumbies at 9.35pm this Saturday in Canberra….PACNEWS

Fijiana 7s sharpen up in Hong Kong build-up
HONGKONG, 15 APRIL 2026 (FBC SPORTS) —The Fijiana 7s side has wasted no time settling into Hong Kong, putting in early work both on and off the field as they build towards this weekend’s tournament.
Arriving alongside the Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s side, the team has focused on fine-tuning combinations, gaining match exposure, and adapting to conditions ahead of one of the biggest stops on the sevens circuit.
Their preparation has included a mix of training, competitive scrimmages, and community engagement.
Head coach Richard Walker says the early arrival has been key to their build-up.
“Yeah, we came last week Sunday with the men’s team… we were hosted by the Hong Kong Football Club, where we trained.”
Walker revealed the squad also benefited from valuable game time against international opposition during their stay.
“We had a four-team scrimmage against Hong Kong, Canada and Denmark… that was good for us.”
Beyond the field, the team has also connected with the local rugby community through outreach programs, adding another layer to their experience.
Walker says the focus now is on refining key areas as they look to deliver a strong performance.
“The rest of the time, we’re just working on stuff to really have a great showing here in Hong Kong.”

Tahiti United leave it late to secure dramatic draw
PAPE’ETE, 15 APRIL 2026 (OFC)—Tahiti United scored twice in second-half stoppage time to come from 3-1 down and secure a dramatic 3-3 draw against South Island United.
Both sides are very much in the mix for a Leaders Group spot as Round 5 continues, with just three points separating the two teams before kick off.
South Island United goalkeeper Steven Van Dijk was a late withdrawal, replaced by Callum Kennett, who was forced into a good save from the game’s first real chance.
The ever-dangerous Germain Haewegene found space on the edge of the area and drilled a well-hit shot, which Kennett was able to athletically palm away.
Haewegene had an even better chance soon after. A ball over the top finding the forward, who showed a lack of composure in lifting a tame effort over the bar when under little pressure.
It was the New Zealand side however who would lead at the break. David Yoo with an excellent effort, drifting from right-to-left across the edge of the area before drilling a shot past Teave Teamotuaitau to break the deadlock.
Sam Garcia responded by bringing on the influential Teaonui Tehau in hopes of finding an equaliser in the second-half.
It was a decision that produced almost immediate dividends, when Tehau drew his side level. The No.10 finishing from close range after Haewegene burst down the right-hand side and crossed for his unmarked team mate.
Parity however lasted just four minutes. Tahiti United failed to deal with a fairly simple ball into their penalty box and Ryan Feutz reacted first, creating space for himself and sliding the ball under Teamotuaitau to restore South Island United’s lead.
Ten minutes later and Feutz had the chance to score his second and his side’s third, when Ry McLeod was upended in the penalty area by Pothin Poma, leaving referee Kavitesh Behari with little choice other than to award the spot-kick.
Feutz made no mistake from 12 yards, firing past Teamotuaitau to make it 3-1 and put the Kiwi side in charge
The prolific forward was in the action again, played through by a neat pass from David Yoo, Feutz rounded ‘keeper Teamotuaitau, only to be brought down, with Behari once again pointing to the penalty spot.
A lengthy VAR check followed, with the referee called for a on-field review, resulting in the decision being reversed and providing a welcome reprieve for Tahiti United.
It was a reprieve they would make the most of. Tehau once again making the difference, drifting into a similar space as his first goal and again finishing via a cross from the right, this time by Matatia Paama to reduce the arrears to one.
The comeback was complete just minutes later. Substitute Franck Papaura picking up the ball on the left-hand side, before cutting inside and dragging an effort back across Kennett, beating the ‘keeper at his near post to level the score.
Tahiti United were the ones looking more likely to nick a winner but a draw was a fair result on the balance of play.
South Island United: 3 (David YOO 43′, Ryan FEUTZ 57′, 67′ (P))
Tahiti United: 3 (Teaonui TEHAU 53′, 90+1′, Franck PAPAURA 90+6′)

Higashide strikes late to give Solomon Kings vital win
SUVA, 15 APRIL 2026 (OFC)—Sota Higashide’s stoppage-time penalty gave Solomon Kings a crucial 3-2 victory over Vanuatu United at HFC Bank Stadium.
With the matches counting down and not much separating those teams vying for a place in the Leaders Group, three points for either side would have been a precious commodity.
A noisy and passionate crowd inside HFC Bank Stadium greeted the sides, with those backing Solomon Kings especially boisterous.
It was Vanuatu United however who started brightly, with Owen Smith flashing an effort just over the bar in the early stages.
At the other end, Don Keana had a similar attempt narrowly miss Matt Acton’s left-hand post.
William Cardona has been a constant threat all season for Vanuatu United with his set-piece delivery and it once again paid off for Lars Hopp’s side. Cardona’s whipped corner-kick glanced in by Alex Saniel to break the deadlock.
Just six minutes later however the scores were level. A Junior David corner-kick wasn’t cleared sufficiently by the Vanuatu United defence and when the ball broke free, Gordon Iro was on hand to slam home through a crowd of bodies.
The end-to-end action continued apace, with Vanuatu United given the perfect chance to restore their lead when Azariah Soromon was brought down by Phillip Mango in the penalty area.
Owen Smith took the resulting spot-kick and despite getting a hand to it, Mango was unable to keep the ball out, as Vanuatu United re-took the lead.
The second period was only seven minutes in when the scores were level once again.
Atkin Kaua’s free-kick from the left-hand side was floated towards the back post and Javin Wae proved too strong, meeting the ball with a downward header that found the back of the net.
The game continued to open up, with both sides desperate for what would be a crucial three points.
Rafa Le’ai was denied by a save low down by Matt Acton from a tight angle, before Owen Smith almost found a way past Phillip Mango at the other end.
Sota Higashide was the next to go closest. The smallest man on the park finding space in the box but could only glance his header over the bar under pressure.
Nine minutes of stoppage time was displayed by the fourth official and in the third of those, Solomon Kings were given a wonderful chance to clinch the win. Barrie Limoki burst into the area and was brought down by Jordy Tasip, with referee Cory Mills pointing to the spot.
Sota Higashide took the responsibility and confidently swept home to send the crowd into raptures and give Solomon Kings a valuable three points.

Hear from the coaches and captains ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ Oceania Qualifiers final
SUVA, 15 APRIL 2026 (OFC)—OFC’s direct automatic qualification spot for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will be decided on Wednesday night when New Zealand and Papua New Guinea meet at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland in the Oceania Qualifiers final.
Both sides now find themselves one win away from next year’s tournament, after winning their respective semi-finals at FMG Stadium in Hamilton on Saturday – Papua New Guinea defeating American Samoa 1-0, and New Zealand beating Fiji 5-0.
The winner will qualify for the finals in Brazil, whilst the loser will get a second chance through the intercontinental play-offs.
New Zealand
The Football Ferns are just one game away from qualifying for their seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup™, the most of any other OFC member association, and will have the opportunity to do so in front of a home crowd on Wednesday night.
New Zealand’s run to the final has been smooth-sailing, scoring 24 goals without conceding through their four matches. Undoubtedly, they come into the final as favorites, having not lost to any current OFC member association in a FIFA Women’s World Cup™ qualifying match, and having not conceded in such a fixture since 2007.
“I think personally, very excited. I think building off of the game the other night, everyone else is excited as well and I think just looking to go to work tomorrow.” said Captain Kate Taylor.
“”We know there are potential threats, but we also have seen some opportunities. We just want to put on a show for our supporters.” said Head coach Michael Mayne.
Papua New Guinea
The Bilums are familiar with this stage of the qualifying process but will be attempting to get past the final hurdle for the first time on Wednesday night and qualify for their inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“It’s exciting for the last few days – the girls are happy to get there. They know themselves they’ve been working so hard and to get here is a big bonus for them and we’re looking forward for the game tomorrow.’ said Bilums Head coach Ericson Komeng.
“The girls deserve to be here. They’ve been working so hard for the last couple of months, playing a tough team like New Zealand, we just have to focus on ourselves and how we can compete and play a good final tomorrow.”
Papua New Guinea have finished as runners-up to OFC’s direct qualification spot on three previous occasions and lost to Panama 2-0 during the intercontinental play-offs at the last qualifying campaign for the 2023 finals.
Like New Zealand, Papua New Guinea are yet to concede through their qualifying campaign, topping Group B of Round 2 in Fiji, and defeating American Samoa 1-0 in their semi-final with a lone goal from Keren Kalapai….PACNEWS

Toughest decision of my life: Cooper Bai
SYDNEY, 15 APRIL 2026 (FOX SPORTS) —Melbourne Storm wish they had him and the PNG Chiefs hope they’ll sign him but, for now, Cooper Bai is loving life on the Gold Coast where there’s a sense of vindication that he re-signed after he starred in Sunday’s thumping win over the Eels.
Still only 19 but with the physical attributes and the emotional intelligence of a seasoned veteran, Bai shapes as one of the most important players for the Titans going forward after he made the huge call to stay put despite initially agreeing to move to Melbourne earlier this year.
“It definitely was the toughest decision of my life I’ve ever had to make,” he said after his seventh game in the NRL. “I’ve never had to make any decisions like that before to pick between two clubs like that.
“This is pretty much where I’ve grown up here on the Gold Coast, and I’ve got relations down south. To be honest, it was the toughest decision I think I’ve actually had to make in my life.”
Bai’s father, Marcus, was a Storm legend, with Cooper chatting with influential figures at the club like coach Craig Bellamy and football director Frank Ponissi who tried to get him to move down south.
“We just had casual chats about footy and life in general. It was really good to talk to them to see a different perspective on everything,” he said. “I’ve pretty much grown up here my whole life, and this is all I’ve known. Being able to interact and see how things are done in other teams and other areas was a big insight for me.
“It came down to me making decisions for myself and what I thought was best at the time. I felt it was best to stay here with the new coaching staff and all of that. That was the main reason.”
While Bellamy has the experience and long-term success, Bai is being coached by Josh Hannay who has youth on his side and is clearly changing things on the Gold Coast after years without success.
“He’s been amazing for me,” Bai said, with the Titans looking much better in defence this season, while their attack is also clicking after they posted 50 points for just the second time as a franchise.
“He’s been teaching me the basics around the game and continually helping me to improve in my craft, playing in my position and just playing in the NRL.
“He’s been really good for me moving forward with my mindset, getting my mind ready for the game as well as my physical body, as the high-performance staff also do. He’s honestly been a game-changer for me. He’s been really good in teaching me ways of doing that, to be able to go quickly with it and go straight away and not fall behind.
“Especially coming in the middle and being young, there’s a lot of noise, but (he’s helped with me) being able to focus on my role.”
The Titans are still building under Hannay, but Sunday’s win is vindication for guys like Bai and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui who decided to stay put. …PACNEWS

Teuruaa defies injury to secure historic decathlon finish
RAROTONGA, 15 APRIL 2026 (COOK ISLANDS NEWS)—Cook Islands athlete Max Teuruaa has delivered a strong performance at the Australian Athletics Championships last week, completing the decathlon with 5986 points, the second-highest score in Cook Islands history, just behind his national record.
Competing over two days against a strong international field, Teuruaa showed resilience and determination, managing travel fatigue and injury challenges to complete all events.
Despite a disrupted preparation, he produced solid performances across multiple disciplines, including improved results in the hurdles and discus. An elbow injury limited his javelin performance – however he pushed through to complete the competition.
“I don’t quit. I’ll still run the 1500 if I must,” Teuruaa said following the event.
The performance continues a strong start to 2026, with Teuruaa already setting seven national records this season, highlighting his progression as one of the Cook Islands’ leading multi-event athletes.
Looking ahead, he will shift his focus to the Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, where he aims to further improve key events, particularly the hurdles.
Teuruaa also emphasised the importance of representing the Cook Islands on the international stage.
“We’re a small island, but we’re strong … and we’re here to make a mark,” he said…..PACNEWS

First Nations Pasifika ready to light up HK 10s after British & Irish Lions debut
HONG KONG, 15 APRIL 2026 (RUGBY.COM.AU)—First Nations Pasifika is ready to make further waves on the global scale at the Hong Kong 10s.
Off the back of their memorable debut against the British & Irish Lions last year, the combined team will feature at the 40th anniversary of the famous event, showcasing the best emerging talent in the country.
It includes Jarrah McLeod, who featured in that game in July, going on to make his Australia Sevens debut in Perth.
McLeod is one of four to have played this year for the Australian team, including Hadley Tonga and Ethan McFarland.
Beau Morrison has also been named, one of several non-First Nations players added to bolster the squad and grow the depth within the pathways.
Legendary Wallaby Glen Ella coaches the team, with RA First Nations Manager Matt Sontar eager to continue the program’s legacy.
“It was off the success of the team in Melbourne against the British & Irish Lions and there’s been quite a unique opportunity through Rugby Australia, which is that we could keep the brand alive and run it doing something with the Hong Kong 10s,” Sontar told Rugby.com.au.
“It’s not an original format of 7s or 15s, but the uniqueness of it is that it partnered with the World Series, which the Sevens have, so Rugby Australia and those guys have helped us work out a plan of attack for First Nations Pasifika.
“We’ve put the wheels into motion with Glen Ella and Simon Raiwalui and myself, who were all involved in Melbourne and then started to identify all of our younger or developing players in and around our system in Rugby in Australia to give them an international stage to play on.”
The team will face French powerhouse Bordeaux-Begles, HKFC Natixis Club and Rugby Tens Select in the group stages, with Sontar embracing the stage and challenge.
“That’s the joy of it, right? We name a bunch of athletes linked with our Sevens or Super clubs but we’ve also got guys that have jumped out of the wilderness playing John I Dent Cup or Hospital Cup and really giving them a chance to put them on a world stage,” he said.
“These guys will play against international teams of players that have Test caps and it’s a really good opportunity for them to wear the jersey and keep the jersey alive. In First Nations Pasifika, it’s the joy of every single one of these guys representing their families and our connected histories, which is unique.”
Sontar was hopeful the stage would allow for more stars like McLeod to break out and showcase their talent, running before the World Series event, which kicks off on the weekend.
“It was six years ago at the Brumbies we identified Jarrah from Nowra, and we brought him in, and he’s worked his backside off,” he explained. “He’s come through the academy and then the unique nature of him making his professional debut against the British & Irish Lions in this jersey 12 months ago, and then you take another six months and Jarrah debuts for the Australian Sevens in Perth.
“He’s a real leader and somebody that is in this squad where the boys can look up to and see that dreams are possible. You then look at guys like Gage Phillips and Bailey Roberts, even Garlen Peace, who was brought in for Australia A and played Coral Coast Sevens as an absolutely unknown and just went bang on the radar.
“It’s just opportunities we’re really working at, and we’re in such a unique space, and I think that makes it so exciting is that Rugby Australia has invested in our lives and is building those relationships.”
First Nations Pasifika squad for HK10s: Logan Aldridge, Malakye Enasio, Oliver Harvey, Ethan McFarland, Jarrah McLeod Ahern, Chris Mickelson, Beau Morrison, BJ Oates, Chace Oates, Garlen Peace, Gage Phillips, Bailey Roberts-Lintmeijer, John Samuelu, Siave Seti, Samuel Toa, Hadley Tonga, Jordan Williams, Chaise Robinson….PACNEWS

Rugby Australia ‘delighted’ about royal visit as Harry and Megan prepare to attend NSW Waratahs-Moana Pasifika
SYDNEY, 15 APRIL 2026 (AAP)—It’s been nearly 23 years since Prince Harry celebrated England’s Rugby World Cup triumph behind enemy lines in Australia and now the rugby-mad royal is back on a reconnaissance mission.
With preparations well underway for the World Cup to return next year, Rugby Australia boss Phil Waugh will host Harry and wife Meghan Markle in a private suite at Friday’s Super Rugby Pacific clash between the NSW Waratahs and Moana Pasifika.
The couple has only one night in Sydney as part of their first visit to Australia since 2018.
But the Harbour City holds good memories for rugby fan Harry, who joined England’s celebrations for their 2003 World Cup triumph.
In the final at Stadium Australia, Waugh was vice-captain as the Wallabies had their hearts broken by a Johnny Wilkinson drop goal in the last minute of extra time.
But there were no hard feelings as Waugh reached out to the Sussexes with tickets to the ‘Tahs.
The Round 10 Super Rugby Pacific clash will be played almost exactly 18 months before Australia’s follow-up World Cup begins in October 2027.
“Harry loves his rugby and we are looking forward to hosting him and Meghan at Friday night’s game,” said Waugh.
“Australian audiences will remember Harry celebrating as England held aloft the Webb Ellis trophy on these shores in 2003.
“And with the Rugby World Cup returning to Australia next year, we are delighted to welcome him back for a match that will feature Test players from Australia and across the Pacific.”
Staff completed a security walk-through at Allianz Stadium last Friday to ensure the couple’s safety on the night.
The Sussexes are expected welcome Invictus Games colleagues to the stadium on Friday, when the Waratahs will look to shake off a 42-14 loss to the Chiefs in their last start….PACNEWS
