When the Pacific wins, we all win – Guterres

UNGA 80 SG and PIFs Leaders

UNITED Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the UN’s strong support for the Pacific during a high-level dialogue with regional leaders.

On the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, Guterres praised the Pacific for its leadership during challenging global times.

“In these turbulent times, the Pacific is a voice of justice, peace and solidarity,” he said.

“I want to thank you for your leadership.”

He highlighted the Pacific’s efforts in climate action, regional peacebuilding, and the “Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace” Declaration, calling the region “a beacon of hope.”

“The United Nations is proud to stand with you,” Guterres added.
“We know when the Pacific wins, we all win. We are in full solidarity with you.”

Pacific Forum Chair and Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Jeremiah Manele, said the dialogue was timely as the Pacific works to implement the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, alongside the UN’s own 80th anniversary reform efforts.

“These are parallel journeys of renewal,” Manele said.

“This dialogue is an opportunity to ensure that our paths are aligned.”

Forum leaders raised three key priorities: climate change and financing, peace and security, and reforming multilateralism to better reflect the region’s needs.

They also called for greater Pacific representation within the UN system, including in senior roles and decision-making bodies.

The dialogue ended with a shared commitment to turn words into action, ensuring a peaceful, resilient, and sustainable future for the Blue Pacific Continent.
