TAIWAN continues to demonstrate solid commitment to its partnership with Pacific Island Forum member states. This is after yesterday handing over $USD2 million in funding for development cooperation at the Secretariat in Suva.
The money will help with funding for climate resilience, ocean governance, and institutional support across the region, officials confirmed and covers the 2024–2025 cooperation period. It will directly support the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent – the region’s flagship plan for sustainable development and collective action on climate change.
According to the Secretariat, the money will also go toward strengthening the Forum’s internal capacity, assisting Smaller Island States, and backing joint projects through the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP).
Taiwan’s ongoing support for the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner and the Pacific Resilience Facility will continue alongside this new contribution.
“Taiwan is ready to deepen practical cooperation that delivers real benefits to Pacific peoples,” said Jason Chih-Sheng Huang, Acting Representative of the Taipei Trade Office in Fiji, during the ceremony.
Forum Deputy Secretary General Esala Nayasi welcomed the contribution, noting it reflects “a shared commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the aspirations of the Blue Pacific.”
Taiwan has been a partner to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat for years, with past contributions targeting sustainable development, disaster preparedness, and regional solidarity. This latest pledge locks in support through 2025 as Pacific nations push for stronger international action on rising sea levels and ocean protection.
