Protect Pacific people, don’t let down your guard, says WHO rep

WHO Western Pacific Director, Dr Saia Piukala

PACIFIC health ministers have been challenged to tackle HIV, climate change and emergencies head on.

The resurgence of HIV – especially in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and the Philippines – was identified as a major issue ahead of the World Health Organization’s 76th Regional Committee for the Western Pacific in Nadi, Fiji.

“Our region and the world are experiencing turbulent times. What happens in one country quickly impacts the world – whether its political turmoil or a new pathogen with pandemic potential,’’ said Dr Saia Piukala, WHO’s Regional Director

“We must tackle the challenges of our times head on – unafraid, yet strategic and prepared.’’

The talks will focus on noncommunicable diseases, with a focus on alcohol and tobacco control and oral health; the threat of climate change and its impacts on individual and national health; and the need to better prepare for and respond to health emergencies.

Piukala – a surgeon and former Tongan health minister – said the issues were different contexts, yet a shared reminder.

“When it comes to protecting our populations, we can never let down our guard,” Piukala said.

“Let us be guided by respectful dialogue, humility, generosity. Let this week be one of renewed relationships, shared purpose, building relationships.’’

Piukala told delegates that the talks were a chance to align-on health priorities, share experiences, and build stronger partnerships between WHO and its Member States, and among countries.

“Let this week be one of renewed relationships, shared purpose, and collective resolve—for a healthier, stronger, and more united Western Pacific Region.’’
