Fiji, Marshall Islands strengthen bilateral ties

President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Dr Hilda Heine, with Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Rabuka.

SINCERE dialogue at a side event during the 54th session of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands, has reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship, solidarity, and shared aspirations between the two Pacific nations.

Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Rabuka, met with the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), Dr Hilda Heine, to further discuss issues of common interest and opportunities to strengthen trade and economic cooperation.

Rabuka praised the Marshall Islands for its robust international advocacy on climate change and reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

He offered Fiji’s assistance to the RMI by exploring the possibility of providing land for the potential relocation of its citizens severely affected by rising sea levels.

They also reflected on the significance of peace and security in the Pacific.

Rabuka emphasised that the Ocean of Peace initiative highlights the region’s collective responsibility to protect peace in all aspects of our lives.

“I reaffirmed Fiji’s solidarity with the Government and people of the RMI as they embark on the rebuilding of their Parliament (Nitijela), which was destroyed last month.”

He also expressed condolences on the passing of former President Christopher Loeak, recalling him as a genuine friend of Fiji and a dedicated advocate for the Blue Pacific Continent.

Heine expressed her sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Rabuka for his sympathies following the tragic fire that destroyed the Nitijela, the RMI’s Parliament building, on August 26.

She thanked Fiji for its continued support and solidarity, as well as for the opportunity to formalise a Memorandum of Agreement on development cooperation during the meeting.

“I acknowledge the valuable contributions of the Fijian community living and working in the Marshall Islands, particularly in the fields of health and education, and hope for increased exchanges that will benefit both our peoples,” she said.

The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their shared commitment to fostering cooperation, resilience, and regional peace – grounded in a common vision for a united and prosperous Blue Pacific.
