Goodman Fielder International (Fiji) has unveiled a world class poultry hatchery in Waila, which will ensure the supply of locally grown protein for many years to come.
Phase one of the state-of-the art project, which covers 1800m2, replaces the former hatchery, which was more than 40 years old.
Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Kamikamica officiated at the opening in April, describing Crest as a “household name” and the new facility as a “testament to innovation, investment and progress”.
The project commenced three years ago and exemplifies Goodman Fielder International (Fiji)’s dedication to local development. More than half of the FJ$22m investment supported local construction, electrical contractors, and other service providers, injecting capital directly into the regional economy.
The project also demonstrates Goodman Fielder International (Fiji)’s commitment to its workforce. Employees are given the opportunity to refine their technical skills through direct training under the externally accredited Crest Academy, which provides the employees with industry recognised competencies and certification in poultry husbandry.
Goodman Fielder International (Fiji) General Manager, Tim Carter noted: “This investment is an important milestone for the poultry operations in Fiji. The company shareholders see this FJ$22m investment as part of our long-term commitment to our business in Fiji underpinned by our confidence in Fiji’s economy, the potential to expand in both domestic and export markets, and the Fiji government’s ongoing support for the country’s poultry industry.”
Phase 2 of the project is focused on extending the egg storage cool room, docking room, kitchenette, and other staff amenities.
It is not merely a construction project, Deputy Prime Minister Kamikamica noted, but rather “symbolises a forward-looking approach towards fostering sustainable practices, supporting local farmers, and generating employment opportunities within our community.
“By embracing technical advancements and innovative processes, this facility sets a new standard for efficiency, quality and environmental stewardship.”
Goodman Fielder International (Fiji) continues to be a strong contributor and developer of Small to Medium size enterprises in Fiji, working closely with 31 contract farmers operating 49 sheds, out of which, 18 farmers have been with the business over 35 years.
In conclusion, Mr. Carter is confident that the Poultry industry in Fiji will continue to be a shining example of a self-funded and self-sustaining agriculture sector, and a strong contributor to the Fiji economy through direct and indirect spending.
