The University of the South Pacific (USP) ‘s Pro Chancellor Siosiua Tuitalukua Tupou Utoikamanu has released a statement clarifying that Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia “has not resigned”.
This week, Fiji’s Education Minister, Asaeli Radrodro told parliament that Ahluwalia “verbally resigned” when Council last met in Cook Islands last year.
In December, Islands Business reported in that meeting, Pal stated his intention to resign, and that he wanted to negotiate the package and terms of his resignation.
Radrodro told parliament that the matter would be revisited when Council next meets.
In today’s statement, Utoikamanu, who is also the Chair of the USP Council, says the Vice Chancellor’s “contract remains in effect until August 2026, following a two-year extension approved by the University Council at its 96th meeting in November 2023.”
The statement continues that the University will adhere to its established governance processes.
“In the meantime, the search for a new Vice-Chancellor and President will commence soon, with the Council set to confirm the timeline and approach at its next meeting in May.”
He says “USP remains committed to stability, continuity, and good governance, and will provide further updates through official channels in due course.”
Pal has proved a controversial leader, with some staff and students striking last year over issues at the university.
