Tonga’s former PM silent on poll

Tongan Prime Minister Dr ‘Aisake Eke

FORMER Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni is remaining tight-lipped on his intentions ahead on a planned November election in the kingdom.

Tonga goes to the polls in November, and several agenda items must be addressed before the Legislative Assembly (parliament) wraps up this week.

“One step at a time. I’m just focusing on the needs of my constituencies and the election, and then we’ll see what happens after,” he said in an interview with Radio New Zealand International.

Hu’akavameiliku resigned in December last year, ahead of a no-confidence motion brought by Dr ‘Aisake Eke who eventually became prime minister.

Eke had made allegations about Hu’akavameiliku but never elaborated on them.

His move was widely seen as supported by King Tupou VI who had strained relations with Hu’akavameiliku for several months.

Tonga’s Legislative Assembly is sitting for the final time this week before members disperse and the November election timeline begins next week, Hu’akavameiliku said.
