PAPUA New Guinea has started formal preparations for the 2027 General Election, with Prime Minister James Marape stating earlier this year that the process started on January 13.

The process will be driven by a new Inter-Government Election Preparedness Committee chaired by the Chief Secretary.

“The committee will bring together electoral, security, intelligence and legal agencies as the government moves to address weaknesses that have affected previous polls,” Marape said.

“The goal is to deliver a safer, fairer and better election and to have the country 2027-ready within about 18 months.”

This week, the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission (PNGEC) has made the Electoral Roll and Verification Information Material available, underscoring the government’s push to strengthen the roll ahead of the vote.

The Electoral Roll and Verification Information Materials state that the Electoral Roll is “an important component of Papua New Guinea’s electoral process” and urges eligible citizens to take part in the exercise “to restore confidence in the PNG Electoral Roll” and help ensure they can vote in the 2027 National General Elections.

The material also states that the process is based on the Organic Law on National and Local-Level Government Elections.

The announcement puts election readiness, roll verification and inter-agency coordination at the centre of the government’s 2027 agenda as the country moves toward the next national polls.
