KIRIBATI has secured the bid to host the 2030 Micronesian Games, marking the first time in history the nation will welcome the sub-regional sporting since its inception in 1969.

The Micronesian Games Council (MCG) announced its decision following a competitive bidding process that included Chuuk, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau.

According to the Kiribati National Olympic Committee, the MCG Executive Board conducted a thorough assessment of each bid, considering factors such as facilities, accommodations, transportation, financial capacity, and alignment with long-term development goals.

Kiribati’s proposal won the majority vote during the Council’s General Assembly, earning praise for its vision and commitment.

Council president Joey Miranda III congratulated Kiribati and commended all bidding jurisdictions for their dedication to advancing sports and unity in the region.

The Northern Mariana Islands withdrew their bid due to the impact of Super Typhoon Sinlaku.

Kiribati’s bid was led by Cabinet Minister Ruth Cross-Kwansing, who emphasised the government’s ongoing commitment to investing in sports infrastructure, including the reconstruction of the R K Uatioa National Stadium and the development of the Kiribati Institute of Sport.

Preparations are now underway for the construction of new sports facilities and a dedicated Games Village, as the nation prepares to host athletes from across Micronesia in four years’ time.

The 11th edition of the Micronesian Games will take place in Nauru in January 2028, with Kiribati set to follow as the next proud host in 2030.
