TONGA’S King Tupou VI was welcomed to Suva today ahead of his assumption of the role of Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific (USP).

Ancient ceremonies of welcome were performed for the King and Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho of Tonga at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel.

The King will officiate at the forthcoming USP graduation.

It was clear from the outset that unity would be a major focus of the new leadership.

USP Chaplain Peni Waqabaca, in his opening prayer—perhaps fittingly—asked God to instil a spirit of unity in all matters pertaining to the university.

Unity was definitely on display with iTaukei students according a full Fijian welcome to the Tongan monarch.

The Tongan student’s association completed the formalities with a rousing dance performance.
