Fiji Defence Minister reassures nation on Golan Heights peacekeepers’ safety

Home Affairs Minister, Pio Tikoduadua

Fiji’s Defence Minister, Pio Tikoduadua has assured the nation that Fijian peacekeepers stationed in the Golan heights remain safe amidst escalating tensions in Syria and its surrounding regions.

“I wish to reassure the people of Fiji that our troops deployed in the Golan Heights under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) remain safe amidst recent developments in Syria and the surrounding region.

“I have been briefed on the situation by the Commander of Joint Task Force Command and our representatives in the Golan Heights,” Tikoduadua said in a statement.

The reassurance comes following Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) operations on 08 December targeting rebel activities in the demilitarized zone.

“All Fijian troops stationed with UNDOF and UNTSO, including those at the headquarters in Camp Faour, are secure and accounted for. Robust contingency plans are in place to safeguard our personnel should the security situation change,” he said.

Highlighting Fiji’s preparedness, Tikoduadua noted the safe evacuation of a Fijian officer from Damascus to Camp Faour, calling it “a testament to the effectiveness of our peacekeeping measures.”

Local communities near UN positions have expressed support for peacekeepers, and the Israel Defence Force (IDF) has bolstered security in the buffer zone, further enhancing protection.

“The operational area remains calm but tense. There is no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers, and we remain in close coordination with the United Nations and other stakeholders to monitor developments closely,” Tikoduadua said.

Tikoduadua commended the dedication of Fijian troops, stating, “I wish to commend the bravery and professionalism of our troops serving in these challenging conditions. Their dedication demonstrates Fiji’s longstanding commitment to international peace and security”.

To families of the peacekeepers, Tikoduadua offered reassurance.

“To the families of our peacekeepers and the Fijian people, I assure you of our commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our personnel” said Tikoduadua.
