FIJI is pushing for greater use of defence capabilities to support law enforcement agencies as transnational organised crime becomes a growing security concern across the Pacific.
Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, said the contribution of defence forces to the security of Pacific Island states and their people was central to discussions at the South Pacific Defence Ministers’ Meeting (SPDMM) in Nadi.
He said the meeting was focused on bringing defence capabilities to the support of law enforcement agencies dealing with transnational organised crime and other non-traditional security threats.
“The contribution of the defence forces of our region, particularly in supporting the defence and security of all of our islands and our people, bringing to the fore the capabilities that we have to support law enforcement agencies,” Tikoduadua said.
He said the meeting’s outcomes would focus on strengthening that cooperation and keeping pace with emerging security challenges.
Tikoduadua said Fiji was well positioned to contribute to regional efforts because of its existing security infrastructure, including the Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC) in Suva and Black Rock in Nadi.
He said Fiji could use these capabilities not only for its own security needs but also to support other Pacific Island states.
The Minister also pointed to discussions with France on additional maritime capabilities, including ship-riding and increased surveillance operations using boats around Fiji and potentially other Pacific states.
He said the MESC could help coordinate such operations with France and other regional partners.
“Ultimately, at the end of the day, this whole conference is about how to bring military and defence capability to assist local security and also law and order,” Tikoduadua said.
The comments come as Pacific countries strengthen cooperation around maritime security and transnational organised crime, including illicit drug trafficking.
