THE Fijian government has approved a five-year plan to advance gender equality and women’s rights.

The plan responds to recommendations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

It aims to strengthen Fiji’s commitment to upholding women’s rights and ending discrimination in all its forms.

Top priorities include raising awareness of women’s rights, strengthening laws to combat discrimination, and expanding access to justice. The plan also focuses on building skills, removing barriers, and ensuring gender perspectives are included in all areas of society.

The plan encourages government ministries to work together, share responsibility, and stay accountable.

A steering committee will monitor progress, review the plan at the halfway point, and use a new reporting system.

These steps will help Fiji meet its goals and prepare future reports under CEDAW, the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Officials say the plan will set a new standard for gender equality in Fiji and help build a fairer, more inclusive society.
