THE United States Department of State is providing ongoing technical assistance to migrate Tonga’s critical government data assets into secure, trusted cloud environments by funding a technical feasibility study carried out by CyberCX USA Inc. to provide strategic options for data centre modernisation and network upgrades.

The United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and the Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Fakafanua, signed the agreement at the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting to advance cooperation on strengthening Tonga’s digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital transformation.

Fakafanua said strengthening Tonga’s digital infrastructure is essential to the country’s future resilience and development:

“Strengthening Tonga’s digital infrastructure is essential to building a more resilient, secure, and connected nation. This partnership with the United States will help us protect critical government systems, strengthen cybersecurity, and provide a secure foundation for expanding digital public services.”

He said this is an important investment in Tonga’s digital future and in the country’s ability to harness technology to improve services and create greater opportunities for our people.

The initiative represents an important step in Tonga’s efforts to build a secure and resilient digital foundation as the Government continues to expand digital public services and modernise service delivery.

The feasibility study is expected to provide the Government with options to strengthen whole-of-government cybersecurity, improve disaster recovery capabilities, expand digital public services, and establish the infrastructure needed to support the future development of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence-powered applications.

The cooperation is part of broader efforts by the United States to support Tonga’s digital resilience and promote secure, trusted digital infrastructure across the Pacific. The Government of Tonga welcomes the emphasis this partnership places on working with trusted international partners to strengthen national cybersecurity, protect critical government systems, and ensure the benefits of digital transformation translate into improved services and greater opportunities for the people of Tonga.
