Niue solar project cuts diesel use, saves millions in fuel costs

NIUE has cut the operating time of its diesel generators from around the clock to just two to three hours a day after opening a new solar and battery system, which is expected to save about $NZ4 million a year in fuel costs.

The 2.79-megawatt-peak solar array and 8.19-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, installed by Sunergise with support from the New Zealand Government, is cutting diesel use by about 1.2 million litres a year.

The system forms a central part of Niue’s goal of generating 80 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. It will generate 5,186 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually and offset 407,992 kg of carbon dioxide.

For Niue’s approximately 1,800 residents, the project reduces exposure to the costs and supply risks of imported diesel, which must be shipped to the island and is vulnerable to global price swings and supply chain disruptions.

Those risks are shared across the Pacific, where remote island nations rely heavily on fuel deliveries and can face fuel-related blackouts that leave communities without power.

The new system strengthens Niue’s energy resilience and gives the island one of the largest per-capita solar capacities in the Pacific.

The project, built beside Niue International Airport, includes 4,536 JA Solar panels and a Sungrow battery. It is fully integrated with the island’s grid and existing battery storage units.

Construction took more than a year. Uneven, rock-hard terrain required extensive preparation, while the system’s structures were anchored with locally sourced concrete and engineered to withstand cyclone-force winds.

“Every Pacific Island faces its own version of this challenge with geographic remoteness, outsized exposure to climate risk and complex solar installation conditions,” Sunergise Chief Executive Paul Makumbe said.

“What we’ve proven in Niue is that these barriers aren’t a reason to wait. Renewable energy expansion across Pacific nations is possible and can be accelerated.”

Makumbe said the project also strengthened local capability.

“I’m proud of the work the team has put into completing this outstanding project, with our excellent site supervisor, Will, working closely with the local community throughout, sharing skills, and enhancing local capability along the way,” he said.

The project was delivered in partnership with the Government of Niue and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

It was formally handed over to the Government of Niue at a ceremonial opening on July 23, marking a major step in the country’s shift toward renewable energy.

Each litre of diesel no longer imported gives Niue more scope to reinvest in healthcare, education and community wellbeing, strengthening the country’s economic resilience and development.
