THE refurbished Syria Monument at Syria Park in Nausori was unveiled today to honour the lives and sacrifices of the Girmitiya (indentured labourers) whose journey and struggles helped shape modern Fiji.
The monument remembers the tragic wreck of the ship Syria at Nasilai Reef on May 11, 1884, when 56 indentured labourers and three sailors lost their lives while travelling to Fiji under the Girmit (Indenture) system.
The story of Syria remains one of the most emotional chapters in Fiji’s Girmit history – reflecting the hardship, sacrifice, and resilience of the Girmitiyas who left India in search of a better future and endured many struggles upon arriving in Fiji.
The commemoration also recognised the bravery of the villagers of Nasilai and surrounding communities, alongside police officers and sailors, who helped rescue survivors during the tragedy.
Minister for Public Enterprises, Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage, Charan Jeath Singh said the monument stands as a place of remembrance for those who perished, those who survived, and the generations that followed.
He said the Syria story was part of Fiji’s shared history and a reminder of the unity, endurance, and hope that continued to shape the nation today.
