THE Fijian military claims that criminal organizations in the country are in possession of weapons.
In a statement released today, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces said intelligence showed an organised attempt to destabilize national security.
The unsigned statement – believed to be from army commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu – said the weapons were not part of military inventory.
The revelations came a day after the death in military custody of Jone Vakarisi who was being questioned in connection with an attempt to breach the RFMF armoury.
In the statement the army said Vakarisi suffered a medical crisis from a pre-existing medical condition.
The incident has been referred to the police and a coronial inquest is likely to take place next week.
Police and military units have been engaged in intense search operations in the last fortnight in an attempt yo uncover illicit drugs and weapons.
These operations follow a billion dollar drug bust and arrests earlier this year.
