HOTELS and resorts in Fiji’s western region have battened down as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu moves through the group.
Strong winds and heavy rain have been experienced throughout the west with rainfall expected across most of the country.
All schools were ordered closed on Sunday night in a pre-emptive move as Vaianu approached.
Maritime authorities ordered ships to move to protective moorings and coastal communities were warned to expect tidal surges.
Communities in the interior of Fiji’s larger island have been advised to seek safety away from river systems and to move livestock to higher ground.
Mist hotels in the West have advised guests to remain indoors until the system has passed.
Domestic flights have been cancelled and shipping services suspended as companies take precautions.
Local media reports that international flights to and from New Zealand and Australia have been affected today.
