“YOU are not only breaking barriers but building the foundations of a more inclusive and resilient Fiji.”

With these words, Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, set the tone as she officiated the launch of the Women in Construction and Trade Fiji (WICAT) website.

The milestone event, held during Women in Construction Week 2026, brought together industry leaders, development partners, and the women driving change in Fiji’s construction and trade sectors.

Minister Kiran praised WICAT’s journey since its founding in 2021, describing its growth into a national movement supporting women across the trades.

She acknowledged the challenges women continue to face in traditionally male-dominated industries but celebrated their resilience and solidarity.

“When women participate in construction and infrastructure, the entire nation benefits,” she said.

WICAT founder Julianne Verma described the website launch as “a symbol of progress and the resilience and courage we’ve had to continue on this journey.”

She emphasised that WICAT’s mission is rooted in empowerment and collaboration — working alongside male allies to move the industry forward.

“Being a woman in the construction and trade industry is not easy. Yet across this sector, one theme unites us: we are strong,” Verma said.

Verma, who will represent Fiji at the Sydney Build 2026 Expo in April, also acknowledged the organisation’s industry partners and sponsors for their continued support.

The youngest WICAT member, 22-year-old Cecilia Sumasafu, shared her journey from facing stigma as a female architecture student to securing an internship at ATELIER 153.

“Anyone can be in this field if you have a passion for it,” she said, crediting WICAT’s mentorship and encouragement.

The newly launched website aims to increase the visibility of women in construction and trade, strengthen networking and mentorship opportunities, and provide a platform for national and regional recognition.

As Women in Construction Week 2026 continues, WICAT stands as a testament to leadership, solidarity, and the growing impact of women who are both literally and figuratively building Fiji’s future.
