FORMER Fiji tight-head prop Joeli Veitayaki has died suddenly in New Zealand.

Originally from Yaroi Village on Matuku, Veitayaki has been described by close relatives as  a legend who was  a symbol of resilience, humility, and love.

His nephew, Buka Sokovagone, described the front rower as an inspiration.

“You wore the white jersey with honor, and every time you stepped onto the field, you reminded us what it means to be Fijian. You were a warrior, a mentor, a father, and a beacon of hope,’’ Sokovagone wrote in a Facebook post.

“Your journey from island rugby island zone roots to the world stage has inspired generations.’’

Tributes for Veitayaki have poured out on social media since his family announced the death earlier today.

Veitayaki was first spotted playing for Matuku in the annual Island Zone competition and taken on by the Sain John’s-Marist Club before joining Police and representing Suva.

From 1994 to 2003 Veitayaki made 49 appearances for Fiji.

In 1991 he moved to King Country in New Zealand and later played for Northland in the provincial code. In Super Rugby he had stints with the Chiefs and the Blues.

Ulster in Ireland was where he ended his career in 2003.

Veitayaki’s son, Haereiti Hetet, is a current Fiji representative.
