Pacific leaders to push for regional action

PACIFIC leaders must shift from plans and discussions to decision and action, says Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele.

Leaders are in Honiara this week for the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting (PIFLM), with a strong call to move from promises to action.

Under the theme “Iumi Together: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continent”, leaders from all 18 Forum member countries are meeting to make decisions on key issues facing the region.

Top of the agenda: climate change, regional security, economic resilience, the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF), the Ocean of Peace initiative, the Review of the Regional Architecture, and the rollout of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

Climate change remains the region’s most urgent threat. With COP31 around the corner, set to be hosted by Australia in 2026, leaders are expected to finalise a united Pacific position on climate finance, access to adaptation funding, and partnerships with international financial institutions.

One major outcome expected this week is the signing of the PRF Treaty, which will legally establish the Pacific Resilience Facility.

Leaders will also discuss the Ocean of Peace initiative, aimed at strengthening regional security and stability, and the Review of the Regional Architecture is another high-level item.

The implementation of the 2050 Strategy, endorsed in 2022, will guide much of the discussions, with focus on unity, resilience, and sustainable development across the Blue Pacific Continent.

Ahead of the leaders’ meeting, more than 140 regional journalists also gathered in Honiara, calling for transparency, clearer communication, and stronger engagement between the Forum and Pacific peoples.

Manele addressed the group, saying: “You are not just observers. You are partners in shaping the future of our region.”

Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa added: “Together, we can amplify the voices of the Blue Pacific Continent.”

The region now looks to its leaders for real progress guided by Pacific values, united purpose, and the urgency of the moment.
