PACIFIC voyagers aboard the twin-hulled canoe, Uto Ni Yalo, have sighted land on the sixth day of sailing to Lata, Solomon Islands, from Suva in Fiji.

Reports from the canoe confirm land was sighted earlier today (Thursday) and the crew are well despite the lack of wind to power the vessel.

The Uto Ni Yalo will join Tepuke, a traditional voyaging canoe from Taumako (Duff Islands), before continuing to Honiara for the opening ceremony of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM).

The sailors from Uto Ni Yalo and  Tepuke will meet carry a joint message to the forum based on protecting oceans in order to create a safer world.

This is the second consecutive forum meeting at which Pacific sailors will reinforce calls for the use of sustainable sailing practices and the protection  of the environment as well as a fossil-fuel free region.
