Fiji’s Parliament has a new Speaker.
Retired Judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko took the position this morning, following a 34-15 vote that secured him the role.
He succeeds Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who has transitioned to become Fiji’s President-elect.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka nominated Jitoko, while Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu put forward Rupeni Nadalo, a former deputy Speaker, as the rival candidate.
Jitoko’s appointment marks a new chapter in Fiji’s parliamentary leadership, with the retired judge pledging to uphold his oath of allegiance and foster impartiality in the role.
Section 77(1)(a) of the Fiji Constitution states that Parliament must elect by simple majority a Speaker who is not a member of Parliament but who is qualified to be a candidate for election as an MP. Fiji’s Parliament has been adjourned until 02 December.
