The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) and its language centre, is proud to announce the signing of an agreement with International Development Programme Education (IDP Education), co-owner of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the world’s leading English language test for study, work, and migration in English-speaking countries. This partnership will allow NUV to offer the IELTS test on its campus, providing a new, convenient opportunity for Ni-Vanuatu test takers.

Under this agreement, NUV will serve as a secure testing location, with candidates able to complete their IELTS test in a computer lab. This initiative is a major step forward in providing local access to a globally recognised certification that is a gateway to international education and student exchange programs in English-speaking countries.

Mr. Jean-Pierre Nirua, Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Vanuatu, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in opening doors for more people in Vanuatu, both Ni-Vanuatu and residents, to pursue higher education and employment opportunities abroad having been IELTS-certified. “The introduction of IELTS on computer will give our students, professionals, and anyone wishing to study or work abroad access to flexible testing options, faster results, and greater convenience”, said Mr. Nirua.
One key feature of this collaboration is the IELTS One Skill Retake, which allows candidates to retake one of the four skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking – without having to redo the entire exam. This innovative approach will support test takers in achieving the best possible results for their global applications.

Michael James, Director of IELTS Operations for Australasia & Japan at IDP Education, expressed excitement about the partnership. “We are excited to support more people in the Pacific achieve their global study or career goals by collaborating with the National University of Vanuatu,” said the Director IELTS Operations for Australasia & Japan at IDP Education.

The new testing centre at NUV will also encourage greater participation in student exchange programs, as the IELTS certification is often required by universities and institutions worldwide for admission to academic programs and scholarships.

By providing local access to IELTS, NUV is contributing to enhance mobility for students and professionals, creating more opportunities for global learning and cultural exchange. The IELTS centre is set to become a hub for those in Vanuatu who are ready to take the next step toward studying, working, or migrating to English-speaking countries.

NUV’s development is aligned with the Vanuatu People’s Plan and the Vanuatu Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan. The focus of education and training under NUV and its associated institutions is based on the priorities of the country’s National Human Resource Development Plan 2020-2030 (NHRDP).

About the National University of Vanuatu
The National University of Vanuatu was established by the Act n°34 of 2019 adopted by the Parliament on 17 December 2019 and officially published on 24 January 2020.

The purpose of the University as stated in its article 3 is “to provide higher education advancement and lifelong learning through academic and professional excellence by way of training, teaching and learning, in both the English and French official languages, research and international cooperation”.

Based on the Act, the NUV is authorised to offer the current Bachelor Programs and to develop collaboration with new partners on the implementation of other Bachelor and Master programs.

The Act also paved the way for merging existing Vanuatu PSET training into the NUV over time, and under the overall supervision of the MoET, including the following institutions which are approved to deliver accredited degree-level courses according to Vanuatu Qualifications Framework (VQF): The Vanuatu Institute of Teacher Education (now School of Education), the Vanuatu College for Nursing Education, and the Vanuatu Agriculture College. Inclusion in the NUV requires meeting high-quality tertiary education and training standards and accreditation requirements by the laws of Vanuatu.

The National University of Vanuatu works in collaboration with several international universities, which support the development of the institution by issuing internationally recognised diplomas.
