Welcome – to whose country?
At a welcome for Australia's new consul-general in Noumea, the ceremony was opened by customary chiefs from the Drubea-Kapume region of New Caledonia - a welcome to country from indigenous landowners that is common across Australia today. But it seems one anti-independence politician was miffed the welcome came from the Kanak people rather than the French High Commissioner. The same politician also grumped that President Louis Mapou was welcomed to the White House, without an adequate chaperone from the French government!
