Fiji’s Parliament will convene in a special sitting on Friday to appoint a President.
Speaker Dr Jiko Luveni directed today that parliamentarians attend the session.
The three-year term of President, Major-General Jioje Konrote, will end on October 12.
By law, Fiji’s president is elected and appointed by Parliament.
Konrote, a career army officer and later MP for the ruling Fiji First Party initially entered Parliament in 2006 with Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and the Social Democratic Liberal Party.
After the December 2006 coup he served in the Cabinet of Rear-Admiral Frank Bainimsrama’s military government.
In 2014 he was elected on a Fiji First ticket.
It is unclear whether Konrote will be re-elected to the position of President.
