The University of the South Pacific (USP) celebrated the achievements of its graduates and marked the formal installation of His Excellency Reverend Sir Tofiga Vaevalu Falani, Governor-General of Tuvalu, as the University’s 33rd Chancellor during the first session of its September Laucala Graduation ceremonies.
Held over two days at USP’s Laucala Campus, the graduation ceremonies recognise students who have successfully completed qualifications ranging from certificates and diplomas to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
More than 800 graduates crossed the stage today from the School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS), School of Business and Management (SBM), School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP), Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF) and Pacific Technical and Further Education (PTAFE).

USP Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council and the Interim Management Group (IMG), Right Honourable Siosiua Tuitalukua Tupou Utoikamanu, welcomed graduates and guests while reflecting on the significance of the University’s newest Chancellor taking office.
“Tuvalu’s leadership reminds us that influence is not measured by size, but by vision, resilience and the ability to inspire change. Its innovative thinking about the future demonstrates how Pacific nations can respond to challenges with courage, creativity and hope.”

The ceremony also highlighted inspiring graduate stories, including that of Soweri Rokoiga Rakabuta, who graduated with a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. She also delivered the graduate address on behalf of the graduating class.

Originally from Nanuku Settlement in Fiji and now an educator at Vunilagi Kindergarten, Rakabuta spoke about the role of community support, perseverance and a passion for education in shaping her journey.
“My journey has shown me that education is not simply about earning a qualification. It is about using what we learn to uplift others, strengthen our communities and inspire the next generation to believe that their dreams are possible.”
Rakabuta is also committed to promoting children’s literacy through the Vunilagi Book Club, helping to nurture a love of reading among young learners.
Among those celebrating a significant academic achievement was Dr Christian-Yves Amato-Ali, who received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Climate Change. Reflecting on the support that helped him reach this milestone, he highlighted the importance of family, mentors and community.

“Behind every graduate is a village. This PhD represents not only years of research, perseverance and dedication, but also the unwavering support of family, mentors, friends and communities who helped me along the way. We achieve more when we recognise the shoulders upon which we stand.”
The ceremonies will conclude with a total of 1,341 graduates. Of the graduating cohort, 910 are women, reflecting USP’s commitment to expanding access to higher education and supporting women’s success across the region.
As graduates embark on the next chapter of their journeys, USP celebrates their accomplishments and the positive contributions they will make to their communities, countries and the wider Blue Pacific.
Tomorrow’s ceremony will celebrate graduates from the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE), School of Law and Social Sciences (SoLaSS), and School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE).
