University of Guam: Centered on Island Wisdom

Islands share similar concerns and similar struggles. But they also share a similar resilience and bring a certain innovation to problem-solving. At the University of Guam, we call this “island wisdom.”

It’s a way of meeting the challenges of today with an island way of thinking and doing — refined over centuries of relying on one’s own community and connections to find ways to move forward.

Established in 1952, the University of Guam is one of 106 federally designated land-grant institutions in the United States, serving Guam and the entire Micronesian region not only in academic instruction, but in delivering knowledge of pragmatic value to the wider com-munity.

Among the “Best Regional Universities in the West

The University of Guam was named a “Top Performer on Social Mobility” and one of the “Best Regional Universities” in the West by U.S. News and World Report for the second straight year.

Our academic programs are ac-credited in the United States by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission and also include program-specific accreditation in business, nursing, education, and more.

We offer 25 undergraduate degrees, 15 master’s degrees, and 13 certificate programs in the liberal arts, natural and applied sciences, nursing and health, business, public administration, education, and civil and environmental engineering.

Recognized for Research

The University of Guam ranks in the top 35% of U.S. universities for federal research funding (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics).

In research, we are leading the way in new knowledge on endangered cycads, invasive species, and the impacts of betel nut on human health. Our Marine Laboratory is one of the world’s first coral research facilities and has been the source of multiple marine research firsts and discoveries. And our Micronesian Area Research Center houses the largest collection in the world of documents specific to Micronesia.

Celebrating 70 Years

In 2022, our 70th anniversary year, we are focused on our theme of “Transforming Lives and Advancing Communities,” and we are looking forward to the many connections yet to be made with our island neighbors.
