THE International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has now appointed Susana Lomani Waqainabete-Tuisese as its new Regional Director.
As countries in the Oceania region continue to strengthen action on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
Her appointment reflects IUCN’s continued commitment to Pacific-led leadership and strong regional partnerships.
“I am honoured to join IUCN at this significant time for our region. The Pacific has always led with resilience, stewardship, and unity,” said Waqainabete-Tuisese.
“I look forward to working alongside our Members, partners, and communities to strengthen collaboration, elevate Pacific voices, and turn our shared commitments into practical results that safeguard our ocean, lands, and livelihoods.”
With over thirty years of experience in conservation and sustainable development, she brings deep regional expertise and a strong record of working alongside governments, communities, and partners.
She will provide strategic leadership for IUCN’s engagement across Oceania, with a strong focus on supporting national priorities, strengthening institutional partnerships, and advancing practical conservation solutions.

The Oceania Regional Office, under her leadership, will continue to prioritise responsive, country-driven support while advancing IUCN’s mission to create a just world that values and conserves nature.
