NIUE has confirmed two HIV cases linked to a single household, with health authorities saying there is no evidence of wider community transmission and no recommendation for residents to change their daily activities.
The two people identified this week are receiving medical care, treatment and support from the Niue Department of Health, the government said. Public health measures initiated after diagnosis include counselling, contact assessment, testing and clinical follow-up where required.
“The overall risk to the wider community remains low,” Health Minister K. Sinahemana Hekau said, adding that health authorities were actively managing the situation and monitoring it closely.
Acting Director of Health Minerva McCurdy Ikimau said investigations had not identified evidence of wider transmission. “The identified cases are linked within a single household,” she said.
Ikimau said people receiving effective treatment can achieve viral suppression, which prevents HIV transmission to others. She described HIV as a manageable medical condition and said modern treatment allows people living with HIV to live long, healthy and productive lives.
The department said HIV is spread through specific body fluids and is not transmitted through everyday social contact, including hugging, shaking hands, sharing food or drinks, attending school, work, church or sporting events, or taking part in community activities.
Local HIV testing, treatment, clinical support and counselling are available at Niue Foou Hospital. People with concerns or seeking testing were advised to contact the hospital on 4100 or visit for advice.
The government said there was no public health recommendation for people to alter normal daily activities, and that schools, workplaces, churches, sporting events and community gatherings could continue as usual.
It urged residents in the close-knit community to respect the privacy and dignity of those affected and avoid speculation or sharing personal information, including on social media. The department said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if there were significant developments.
