Papua New Guinean sprint sensation Pais Wisil has etched his name in the history books by breaking the country’s 30-year-old 100m record, previously held by former fastest man Peter Pulu.

Wisil achieved this feat at the recent 128th Queensland State Track & Field Championships, held from 13-16 March 2025.

Coming from a family with a strong sprinting pedigree, Wisil clocked an impressive 10.24 seconds in the Men’s 100m Open B Final, surpassing Peter Pulu’s long-standing national record of 10.40 seconds, set in 1995.

The race, held on Saturday, March 15th at 4:05 PM, saw Wisil finish second to Rohan Browning of New South Wales, who took gold with a time of 10.12 seconds, aided by a 1.2m/s tailwind.

Macgregor Leavy from Mayne Harriers finished third with a time of 10.85 seconds.

Wisil’s achievement marks the end of a 30-year drought for Papua New Guinea, with his time now standing as the new national benchmark.
