Solomons marks 47 years of freedom

Happy anniversary … Solomon Islands children. The country has celebrated 47 years of independence.

THE Solomon Islands has marked the 47th anniversary of regaining independence from Great Britain.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele reminded guests at celebrations in Honiara of the country’s motto – To Lead Is to Serve.

“They are a national calling—a powerful reminder to those in public office and every citizen that leadership must be rooted in humility, sacrifice and service to our people and country,” Manele said.

The country has been plagued with ethnic violence and systemic corruption for an extended period.

In Suva, the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Baron Waqa. Congratulated the Solomon Islands.

“This significant milestone is a time to reflect on the strength, resilience, and aspirations of Solomon Islanders, and to honour the nation’s unwavering commitment to peace, progress, and unity,’’ Waqa said.

“Solomon Islands has long played a vital role in shaping our collective regional vision, championing and advancing Pacific values on the global stage. Your leadership continues to enrich and strengthen the solidarity of our Forum family.”

Pacific leaders will hold their annual meeting in Honiara in September.
