MORE communities across Fiji are expected to gain access to safer, better-lit public spaces after the Government of Guangdong Province, China, hands over 100 solar streetlights.
The lights are expected to be installed in towns and cities, informal settlements and rural communities, providing lighting along roads and public areas while supporting community activities after dark.
Acting Minister for Housing and Local Government Mosese Bulitavu received the donation during a handover ceremony in Suva today.
This latest assistance brings the number of solar streetlights Guangdong Province has provided to Fiji to 350 since 2023.
Guangdong previously donated 200 solar lights in November 2023, followed by another 50 in February 2025.
Bulitavu said the latest donation reflected the ongoing development partnership between Fiji and China and the two countries’ commitment to sustainable development.
“This donation is a reflection of the strong partnership between the Government of Fiji and the People’s Republic of China, and our shared commitment to sustainable development,” Bulitavu said.
The solar lights will give municipal councils and communities another option to improve public lighting while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.
The Government acknowledged Guangdong Province and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for their continued support for development. The initiative is expected to support efforts to promote renewable energy use and develop cleaner, more sustainable communities across Fiji.
