There has been a shortage of fuel on the island of Banaba for more than five months now.

A Community Worker on the island Banian Burenimoone reports to Radio Kiribati News, the shortage has affected the income generation of fishermen and transportation for students, collecting drinking water from water depot and transporting patients to the hospital.

Burenimoone said a shipment of fuel from KOIL which included six barrels of benzene and one kerosene arrived there on 28 January but ran out on 02 February.

In response, KOIL office in Betio said it has plenty of fuel but there are no available ships to deliver them to the outer islands. KOIL said a number of boats left for Banaba recently but they can only take on passengers and not fuel.
