THE Minister of Tourism for Samoa, Fata Ryan Schuster, has called for stronger regional unity to protect Pacific cultures and dignity in the digital age.
He made the remarks while officially opening the Sarong and Talent Night of the 37th Miss Pacific Islands Pageant at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa in Nadi.
Addressing dignitaries, contestants and guests, the Minister described the pageant as “more than a celebration of beauty,” but a respected regional platform that amplifies the collective Pacific voice and nurtures leadership, advocacy and service.
“As chairman of this prestigious regional event, I warmly welcome each contestant, our judges, and support teams who have travelled across the vast ocean to be part of this celebration of Pacific identity, pride, and unity,” he said.
He highlighted this year’s theme, “One Pacific. One Voice: Standing Together for Online Safety,” as both timely and significant in an increasingly digital world.
“While technology offers immense opportunities for connection, education and growth, it also presents challenges that threaten our dignity, cultural integrity and collective wellbeing,” he said.
The Minister stressed that Pacific values of respect, community, and storytelling must be upheld both offline and online, urging unity against cyber harm, misinformation, and exploitation.
“To our contestants, you are already winners by virtue of your courage to represent your countries and speak on issues that matter deeply to our region,” he said, encouraging them to carry themselves with confidence, humility, and pride.
He also acknowledged the Government and people of Fiji, sponsors and organisers for hosting the regional event, wishing contestants a successful and memorable pageant as they celebrate Pacific solidarity, culture, and talent.
