AS the 18th Government of Niue approaches the next general election, Prime Minister Dalton Emani Makamau Tagelagi is reflecting on a term defined by resilience and record-breaking growth.
“We reflect on our term as the 17th and 18th Government (2020–2026) and the work undertaken. This period brought significant, at times unprecedented, challenges.
“Throughout, we have been proud of how the people of Niue stood together: supporting Government decisions, strengthening our resilience, and contributing to recovery.”
Emerging from the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic and global fuel price shocks, Niue has moved decisively from crisis response to a period of renewed national strength.
Tagelagi said, nonetheless, Niue persevered as it had in the past, adapted to changing circumstances and continued to move forward.
The nation’s economic recovery is being hailed as a clear success story. In 2023, Niue experienced an exceptional GDP growth rebound of 8.9 per cent, supported by a massive tripling of visitor arrivals, which reached over 12,400 by 2024.
Tourism earnings have soared to nearly $10 million, exceeding pre-pandemic levels and signalling strong international confidence in Niue as a premier destination.
Infrastructure and environment remain top priorities. Significant milestones include the resurfacing of the Hanan International Airport runway and major progress in the renewable energy transition to reduce reliance on diesel. Globally, Niue continues to lead in ocean conservation through the Niue Ocean Wide (NOW) project and the establishment of the NOW Trust to provide sustainable financing for marine protection.
The Government has also expanded its international reach, establishing formal diplomatic relations with eight new countries, including the United States, Canada, and Germany.
Domestically, the nation celebrated 50 years of Self-Government and modernised its constitutional framework, officially changing the title of the head of government from ‘Premier’ to ‘Prime Minister’.
Despite persistent pressures, such as rising living costs and healthcare demands from an ageing population, Tagelagi praised the people of Niue for their patience and strength.
“We sincerely thank our people for the patience, strength, and resolve shown throughout this period. We also acknowledge our Ministers for their leadership and commitment across their portfolios.
We extend our appreciation to Members of the Assembly, public servants, private sector partners, and community members who contributed in whatever capacity was required.
“We have laid important foundations for the future, guided by unity, service, and responsibility,” he said.
