Papua The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) has made history by electing Mrs Emma Waiwai as its first female President during the 2024 Annual General Assembly held in Port Moresby.
This landmark election marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history and reflects its commitment to gender equality and progressive leadership.
Waiwai, who has been an active member of the PNGOC for several years, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the role.
Her election is a testament to her dedication and the confidence that the members have in her ability to lead the organiSation into a new era of growth and success.
In her acceptance speech, Waiwai expressed her gratitude to the members for their support and outlined her vision for the future of the PNGOC.
“I am deeply honoured to be elected as President of the PNGOC. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to further the development of sports in Papua New Guinea and to ensure that our athletes have the support they need to excel on the international stage,” she said.
The elections also saw Elaine Iorive elected as Treasurer, Gomara Gorua as Legal Advisor, and Ryan Pini as Chairman of Fundraising, who was elected unopposed. These appointments are expected to strengthen the leadership team and enhance the operational efficiency of the PNGOC.
The PNGOC also presented its audited financials, annual report and strategic plan update to its members to uphold its good governance and transparency values, and remains committed to its mission of inspiring Papua New Guinea through sporting excellence and success.
The election of Waiwai and the new executive team is a positive step towards achieving these goal.
Meanwhile, the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) has honoured Sir John Dawanincura with Life Membership in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the organization and sports in Papua New Guinea.
This accolade was announced and unanimously accepted by all members by way of a standing ovation during the Annual General Assembly held at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby, marking the end of Sir John’s illustrious tenure as President.
Sir John Dawanincura has been a pillar of the PNGOC for 38 years, serving 26 years as Secretary General (1984-2010) and 12 years as President (2012-2024).
His leadership and vision have been instrumental in the growth and success of the organization, and his contributions have left an indelible mark on the sports community in Papua New Guinea.
In his farewell address, Sir John reflected on his journey and expressed his gratitude to the members and stakeholders who supported him throughout his tenure.
“It has been a privilege to serve the PNGOC and to be part of the incredible journey of sports development in our country. I am deeply honoured to be made a Life Member and will continue to support the organization in any way I can,” he said.
The General Assembly also celebrated Sir John’s numerous achievements, including the 2015 Pacific Games, securing a permanent home and office for the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee, and the high standards of good governance and transparency he has built. His commitment to the Olympic Movement and the development of sports has inspired many and sets a high standard for future leaders and sports administrators.
The PNGOC extends its heartfelt thanks to Sir John for his unwavering dedication and leadership. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide the organization as it moves forward under the new leadership of Emma Waiwai and the executive board.
