FROM listening to navigation stories, Maciu Nawai is on a voyage of 1100 miles of open ocean from Fiji to the Solomon Islands.
Maciu is part of the Uto Ni Yalo crew sailing to the 54th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting, which will be hosted in Honiara.
“Never have I imagined that one day, my first ever trip abroad was going to be on the sea, and this is a proud moment for me as the youngest to sail with other experienced sailors,” he said.
The 17-year-old is from Fulaga, Muana-i-cake and his maternal links are in Nakorotubu, Ra.
“My life has revolved around the ocean. I love going out to the sea, fishing, swimming, or travelling. I have enjoyed every minute of it.
“I am also proud to be from the Jafau Clan in Fulaga, whereas my grandfathers are known in the field of wood carving and canoe building.”
Before all the excitement of sailing, he started his journey volunteering with the Uto Ni Yalo Trust last year.
“I come around to help with the maintenance and with other little things that need to be done. I was introduced to this work as a volunteer,’’ he said.
Nawai added that his grandparents and family are proud of him for taking this first trip, as they also look forward to hearing about his navigation experiences.
“This is not just an ordinary trip for me, as I will be sailing along with experienced sailors and with the Best Traditional navigators.”
He also left a clear and impactful message for everyone: “The ocean provides for us, and we also have the responsibility to take care of it.”
Sail Master Angelo Smith’s guidance said the voyage would be transformative for Maciu and all the crew.
“It will empower them in ways they can’t imagine, and they need to recognise that not everyone has the chance to engage in something so significant,” he said.
