Nauru has taken transformative steps towards sustainable energy with the launch of its first electric bus (e-bus) in Yaren District, marking a significant commitment by the government to reducing emissions and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
It reflects the country’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency, and support long-term climate goals in line with its National Energy Roadmap.
The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Government of Nauru and UNDP, highlighting the importance of this achievement for the island nation’s energy future.
In his keynote address, Minister Asterio Appi stated: “It is a privilege to mark this historic milestone—the launch of Nauru’s first electric buses and charging station under the SMARTEN initiative. This achievement represents a tangible step toward cleaner, more sustainable public transport and highlights our shared vision for a resilient future.”
UNDP Pacific Office Deputy Resident Representative for the North Pacific, Kevin Petrini, congratulated all partners and emphasised the SMARTEN project’s role in driving Nauru’s energy transformation.
“This handover underscores the SMARTEN project’s critical role in advancing Nauru’s energy goals. It’s a crucial step toward low-carbon development, fostering confidence in renewable solutions and inspiring sustainable progress across communities.” Petrini said.
Funded by Global Environment Facility, the SMARTEN project focuses on enhancing Nauru’s energy resilience by integrating renewable energy technologies and improving energy efficiency. The e-bus is one of many initiatives aimed at achieving Nauru’s National Energy Roadmap targets, which include expanding renewable energy use across sectors and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
In her speech, DCCNR Assistant Secretary Anadella Edward highlighted the broader vision behind the e-vehicle launch, “Beyond transport, we’re driving forward with other clean energy initiatives. Today’s launch is just the start. We’re moving step by step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for Nauru.”
Looking ahead, the SMARTEN project will continue supporting Nauru’s energy transformation by promoting solar energy solutions, increasing energy efficiency in key infrastructure, and encouraging sustainable energy practices across the country. The successful introduction of the e-bus serves as a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration and innovation in addressing climate challenges.
“The message displayed on the side of the bus is a powerful reminder for all Nauruans,” said Phaedora Harris, Acting Director of DCCNR Energy Division.
“Rangaen ngabumine dogin apwiejeta jaran — Saving today to power tomorrow – inspires us to embrace sustainability for future generations.”
