Miss Pacific Islands 2026 champions online safety and regional unity

Miss Pacific Pageant Contestants

FIJI has welcomed the Pacific back to its shores as host of the 37th Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, after a nine-year gap.

Officiating at the presentation of research topics, Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa highlighted the event’s growing prominence and the urgent issues it addresses.

This year’s pageant theme, “One Pacific. One Voice: Standing Together for Online Safety,” puts a spotlight on the dangers Pacific youth face online, including cyberbullying, predators, misinformation, and drug dealers targeting young people via social media.

Minister Nalumisa emphasised the need for real responses to these real threats, noting that the impact of the seven contestants—each representing a Pacific nation—extends far beyond traditional advocacy.

He praised the outgoing Miss Pacific Islands from Samoa for her leadership and advocacy across issues including climate change, substance abuse, and health, saying she has exemplified what it means to be a Pasifika woman.

Nalumisa noted that platforms like the Miss Pacific Pageant are vital for raising awareness and reaching wider audiences.

A special tribute was paid to the outgoing Miss Pacific Islands from Samoa, who Nalumisa described as embodying the spirit of a true Pasifika woman. “You’ve described your journey as Miss Pacific Islands as one of learning how to listen well. But we have listened to you too,” he said, thanking her for raising awareness on critical regional issues and for touching lives across the Pacific.

The pageant also provides a stage for Pacific creative industries—fashion, music, choreography, and cultural practice—to gain visibility, supporting the region’s creative economy and showcasing Pacific excellence on the global stage.

Nalumisa called on contestants to strategically use their influence in schools, communities, and international forums to champion online safety and drive positive change.

He urged governments and the private sector to invest in events that deliver cultural, social, and economic benefits, labelling the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant as a strategic investment in the region’s future.

He closed by acknowledging sponsors and partners for backing women’s empowerment and Pacific culture.

As the pageant week continues, Fiji stands proud to unite the region in advocacy, creativity, and celebration.
