It’s never too late

“NEVER believe it’s too late to study,” says Jovesa Saumaki, who recently graduated from the Fiji National University (FNU), encouraging those who think they are too old to pursue further education.

Now the proud holder of Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management from FNU, the police officer said for him, it’s all about growing and setting an example. “My journey through study was driven by my desire to grow professionally, become a better leader, and set a positive example for my children and family.”

It was not an easy road for Saumaki, who said the year of study required a lot of sacrifice, discipline, and perseverance. It was also tinged with pain as he had to endure the heartbreaking loss of his daughter. It made reaching the graduating podium even more meaningful, and he was determined to honor her memory. “Graduating reminded me that even through grief and hardship, strength and determination can still carry a person forward.”

Workforces are often upskilling their workers, and Saumaki sees this as no different.

“This qualification will complement my work by strengthening my leadership, communication, and management skills. It has given me greater confidence in decision making, mentoring junior officers, and handling responsibilities more effectively within the Police Force.”

His wife and children were his biggest “why”, and it was clear from how he spoke about them in glowing terms. “My biggest inspiration has been my wife and children. Despite everything we went through, my wife remained my greatest source of strength and encouragement. Their love, support, and belief in me motivated me to keep pushing forward during the toughest times, and one of my favourite moments was graduation day itself – seeing my wife proud and knowing that every sacrifice, challenge, and painful moment along the way was worth it.

Saumaki looks forward to more growth in the future and also wants to inspire others. “My future plans are to continue growing professionally, take on greater leadership responsibilities, and continue learning wherever possible. I also hope to inspire others—especially younger officers—to invest in education and personal development no matter what challenges life brings.”
