MORE than 20 inmates at Fiji’s toughest prison are on hunger strike over what they claim are human rights abuses.
The 25 men have been separated from the remaining prisoners at the Naboro Maximum facility outside the capital, Suva.
The Fiji Corrections Service confirmed the strike was in its second day yesterday and five men had been identified as the ringleaders, two inmates refused to participate in the strike and have been removed to a separate area within the prison.
It’s understood a crackdown at Naboro ended the movement of drugs and mobile phones between prisoners and this led to a protest which escalated to the hunger strike.
Corrections sources said the hunger strikers would be monitored regularly.
