The Fiji National University (FNU) has launched the FNU Foundation at their Namaka Campus in Nadi, an initiative designed to support underprivileged students and reduce financial barriers to higher education.
Led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, the Foundation aims to ensure that financial struggles do not prevent students from completing their studies.
Former President of Fiji and Na Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, who serves as the Foundation’s patron, donated $10,000 at the launch and urged others to contribute.
“This Foundation embodies our collective commitment to ensuring that every Fijian student, regardless of socio-economic background, has access to the opportunities provided by FNU,” he said.
“Beyond giving back to the community, the Foundation creates opportunities, breaks down barriers, and provides all Fijians with access to higher education, empowering them to dream, build, and ultimately, succeed.”
He added that the initiative aligns with global commitments, particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on quality education, and SDG 10, which aims to reduce inequalities.
The Foundation has introduced several initiatives to provide direct support to students.
Among them is the Coffee Forward Initiative, a programme that allows students and staff to pre-pay for coffee, with proceeds funding meals for students who cannot afford them.
Another key initiative, the Veilomoni Closet, aims to provide professional attire to students who may not have the means to buy suitable clothing for job interviews, networking events, or formal university functions.
The initiative aims ensure that students are not disadvantaged by financial struggles when seeking employment or internship opportunities.
For students facing food insecurity, the Veilomoni Food Pantry is expected to provide essential groceries and meals.
The pantry is designed to support students who struggle with daily expenses, offering them access to basic food supplies so they can focus on their studies without the added pressure of affording meals.
FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said the Foundation is built on the university’s commitment to its students and the broader community.
“At FNU, we firmly believe in caring for our people, upholding honesty, and serving with excellence,” she said.
“This is a momentous day for FNU, and I am confident that all of you here today will remember this significant milestone.”
She also acknowledged the contributions of donors and supporters, emphasising that the Foundation’s success will depend on continued community and corporate engagement.
“The Foundation is positioned as a long-term support system for students who need financial assistance.”
With ongoing funding, the university hopes to expand its reach and introduce more initiatives that address student welfare beyond just tuition fees.
