FIJI and the Republic of Korea are looking to strengthen their strategic partnership, with discussions focusing on energy security, technology, maritime development and economic cooperation.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Sakiasi Ditoka held talks with his Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, in Seoul to identify new areas of practical cooperation.
Ditoka said Fiji wanted to move its relationship with Korea beyond traditional development assistance towards a broader partnership focused on resilience, technology, economic development and strategic cooperation.
Energy security was identified as a key area for cooperation, including strategic fuel security, infrastructure, technical expertise and knowledge-sharing as Fiji transitions towards cleaner energy.
The ministers also discussed cooperation in maritime and industrial development, aviation, skills and technology, including Korea’s potential support for Fiji’s ambition to strengthen its role as a regional hub for the Pacific.
Ditoka welcomed Korea’s continued development assistance through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and identified opportunities for greater cooperation in climate resilience, digitalisation, renewable energy, maritime development and human resource capacity building.
Fiji also invited Korea to support its Ocean of Peace initiative through areas including maritime security, disaster preparedness, humanitarian assistance and climate-related security.
The two countries also reaffirmed the importance of working together through regional and multilateral platforms on climate change, sustainable development and ocean governance.
Ditoka also conveyed Fiji’s intention to reopen a resident Embassy in Seoul in 2027, which he said would further strengthen direct diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
