Port Moresby has the potential of becoming the pulse of Papua New Guinea’s next wave of development, says Prime Minister James Marape.
On Friday, Marape shared his vision on the nation’s future at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Paga Hill Special Economic Zone (SEZ) satellite casino.
“With this new casino, Papua New Guinea aims to tap into the lucrative Asian market and elevate the country’s status on the global stage,” he said.
The project, led by international developers, with hotel rooms and top-tier facilities, is expected to be completed in six months, bringing new opportunities for tourism and employment.
“The casino would cater exclusively to overseas guests, tourists, and high-earning locals, positioning Port Moresby as a premier destination with world-class attractions,” Marape said.
Paga Hill Development Company chairman Peter Barge said the casino was designed to the highest standards, adopting entry requirements similar to those of Singapore’s elite casinos.
“This project marks a significant milestone in PNG’s journey towards economic transformation, helping to reshape Port Moresby into a thriving city,” he said.
“It is aimed for the visitor and expat community tourism market.
“It is not being targeted at the local population.
“It is like the Singapore model, adopted from the operating procedure from the Southeast Asian nation.
“You will need a passport to enter or become a member with a restrictive membership fee.
“That is how it is operated. “That is what the Singapore government wanted, and I am sure this is what this Government wants as well,” Marape said.
