Bougainville stands firm on independence

Bougainville’s position is clear — our people voted for independence as defined in the referendum ballot paper, and that is the only model we are here to discuss.

This was the firm message delivered by the Vice President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville Patrick Nisira, on behalf of the President, in the closing remarks at the second Joint Moderation Meeting in Port Moresby Thursday.

“I am happy that this session recognises the National Government’s agreement of Bougainville’s independence,” the Vice President said.

Vice President Nisira also thanked the Moderator for receiving the Bougainville Memoir, a comprehensive document articulating the region’s case for independence, and the principles of the Bougainville Independence Model.

He emphasised that the Moderation process must remain consultative and focused solely on the referendum result for independence. “This consultation is on independence and there is no other models or options to talk about,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Vice President Nisira welcomed the announcement of the next Moderation Meeting to be held in Burnham, New Zealand.

“I thank the New Zealand Government and its people for accepting to host the Burnham moderation meeting. New Zealand shares a long history with Bougainville and I look forward to the continuation of a mutual relationship,” he said.

He expressed the ABG’s expectation that the Burnham meeting must bring resolution to the core issues at the heart of Bougainville’s political aspirations. “The ABG’s expectation of the Government of PNG is for us to conclude this process reflective of the aspirations of my people for independence.”

Vice President Nisira expressed his gratitude to the key stakeholders in the process, acknowledging the leadership and support of the Moderator and his team, the United Nations, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, the Minister for Bougainville Affairs, and the National government team.

He also acknowledged the ABG leadership, Attorney General, and former President Grand Chief Dr John Momis, along with the Chief Secretary and technical team.
