Fiji’s Garment Industry at (another) crossroads

Look at the label on your clothing, and chances are it will tell you it is made in China, India, Bangladesh, or Vietnam. If it is Pacific wear, the tag may read Fiji or one of her neighbours. Fiji once had a thriving garment industry, with more than 20,000 employees in 2000.

It is now less than a quarter of that, with Textile, Clothing, and Footwear Council (TCF) President Inbamalar Wanarajan saying since the COVID pandemic, jobs in the sector have dropped from 7000 to 4000. More than 70% of these workers are women.
