King Tupou VI seeks more involvement in Tonga’s politics.

For 15 years, the Kingdom of Tonga has gone through a political experiment that was supposed to make the governance system “more democratic”. This was the declared will of the former Monarch, King George Tupou V, the chief architect of the Constitutional Reform of 2010.

But the events of the past 12 months have threatened to undo the attempt to make Tonga more democratic. King Tupou VI seems to be reasserting his royal will in the appointment . . .
