REMOTE Solomon Islands communities have reported flooding, wave surges, and strong winds as Tropical Cyclone Maila impacts parts of the Western Province.
The Category Three system has sustained winds near the centre of 130 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 185 kilometres per hour.
Villagers in Rendova told local media that heavy rain and thunderstorms were experienced at Vasara Village with tidal surges crossing the shore and entering residential areas.
At least one home has been destroyed and two marine craft swept away. Villagers have evacuated to higher ground and continue to monitor the situation.
The Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office said TC Maila was likely to intensify further and posed a serious threat to life and property.
Western, Choiseul and Isabel residents have been warned to expect gale-force winds, coastal flooding, and dangerous storm surges. Villagers have been advised to move to higher ground immediately and stay away from coastlines and rivers
In Central, Malaita, Guadalcanal, Makira, Temotu, Rennell and Bellona, residents have been warned to expect heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding, and rough seas.
Government officials have advised them to stay indoors and prepare for possible evacuations.
